    Loved this! Would you recommend taking 16 over 14?

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz 26 днів тому

      That would depend on what you are looking for in a road, but in general no I wouldn't, they are both equally spectacular! 16 has more amenities, more traffic, and Ten Sleep Canyon makes it more spectacular. 14 is a little bit quieter, a little more remote, and the entrance to Shell Canyon from the west makes up for the canyon not being as colorful as Ten Sleep. But 14 also has 14A, with even less traffic, a more remote feeling, the medicine wheel, and spectacular views of the basin to the west. If you do 14A also be sure to take the short drive up to Five Spring Falls (just trust me on that or check out my Five Spring Falls video).

    Whew, that was a tough one to hang on for, but I held tight (80% view time is the most important factor) and glad I did the last part is the best! I've had a channel for years, initially just to share family videos, but everything has changed. Have recently gotten back into sharing with shorts and doing research on channel pushing algorithms. Good footage and great stories, but I think this video is slow to keep a viewer. Maybe more edit changes and starting with your story, then giving kudos to other channels?

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz Місяць тому

      At 80% you did very well! You are right, it is way too slow a pace, especially with my speaking. I probably did this video more for myself. I enjoy working through all the technical and there is a lot in this vid. Starting with the background which is all created post, I am actually just sitting in front of a green screen. I also did it for my hardcore fans that would sit through it to see what my plans were. Glad you liked the last part, being involved in a big production was a lot of fun, as well as educational! As I mentioned in this video, and as you probably know as a creator, comments are really appreciated, thank you so much!

    Love that you posted it both in directions! Recently took this drive from Payette, up through Cambridge. Amazing sunny spring day with beautiful views on an amazing road, kept thinking how much fun it would be on a motorcycle. Be safe on it it though! Glad I was focused on the road driving back, a pick-up truck driver (assuming sight seeing) crossed into my lane, fortunately in a spot where there was space as I needed to swerve off the road to avoid a head-on collision. Could easily have been force into the river in a different location. Hope your still riding and posting this season!

    Great video. At the 18 second time point of the video while on Hwy 36 I noticed some steel grates across the highway. Was there any issue riding over them? Seem like it went well and there's no concern.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz 4 місяці тому

      Steel grates on the highway are reasonably common on secondary highways and roads where cattle are on open range or in the case you saw wildlife are being restricted movement to other areas. They are often made of heavy steel pipe and place on the highway where a fence is to replace an actual gate across the road. In my area we call them cattle guards but they are often called Texas Gates in other parts. In the vid the guard was to stop the Bison from using the road to leave the park. Generally they are of little concern to ride over but use the same methods as crossing a railway track, try to be vertical not leaned over, maintain your speed not braking or accelerating, and cross them square on if possible. If it is wet or frosty be sure to apply all those rules double. Many cattle guards also have running strips placed on top of them to provide a smooth surface for car tires, some riders use these strips to cross but I prefer not to because if your approach isn't perfectly aligned it can act like grooved pavement and pull the bike around a bit. Now for my question, what part of the world are you from that you have not encountered these? I am just so used to them being around all my life I rarely take note of them.

    • @sandtrap9
      @sandtrap9 4 місяці тому

      @@RobertMerz I'm from the north east. Specifically Winchester VA. About 50 miles west of Washington DC. Close to Skyline Drive National Park. To be honest the first time I saw "Cattle" gates was during an episode of Yellowstone. :)

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz 4 місяці тому

      They are just one of those things we grew up with in the west so don't think much of them. We have lots of open range, government land that cattle owners can obtain a permit to range their cattle on, and that is where you will most likely encounter them. It is easy to think that everywhere in the world is the same, and it is good to be reminded that it isn't, thank you.

I had heard of it but it wasn't high on my to do list partly because of it's fairly low elevation, but my opinion changed after riding it. It is a beautiful ride with endless sweeping corners, peaceful views of the river, and very light traffic when I did it. I highly recommend it! It is the kind of road that just makes you want to chill, at least it had that effect on me. The top of the pass is fairly low level at just over 5,200 feet and I believe is kept open year round so I would expect it to be ridable and snow and ice free on nice days anytime in April and on. Expect it to be a cold ride with high snow banks though until at least early June, and remember mountain passes can get snow any month of the year.

    This was a beautiful ride, Grants Pass. OR to Crescent City, CA. I live in GP and makes me want to get in the car and go for a drive over there. Another beautiful drive is to go to Portland, OR and drive down 101 to Brookings, OR. The ocean will be on the right hand side nearly all the way. Thank you for posting this. Enjoyed it very much.

      I have rode 101 but I did it south to north, my usual preference for a highway if I am filming it as it avoids sun glare in the recording. 101 is a great ride either direction, awesome views, and lots of points of interest!

      @RobertMerz 10 місяців тому

      Wow, I did not know this was happening, thanks for letting me know. I looked it up and it is the Smith River area, the curviest part of this road. It is sad, but it is part of nature's cycles. Even by next year we will see new growth re-claiming the burnt areas as the cycle continues, but we will never see the forest again there in our lifetimes. Sadder is that there are people living in that forest, including a couple small communities, and losing one's home is something that is extremely hard to recover from.

      It does not rely on distant views and large landscapes to make it a good ride, so I can see it being good even in the rain! I hope your other Black Hills rides aren't to wet, but sounds like you can handle it! Thanks for leaving a comment.

    I first rode a motorcycle over Tioga Pass on an old Harley back in 1956......I was 16 and had my 15 year old brother with me. Actually, it was the final leg of a three week 3500+ mile trip.

    • @RobertMerz

      Wow, just wow! In 1956 I bet Tioga Pass was an adventure all by itself, not like the super highway it is today. At 16 years old, and with your younger brother, and being far from home, wow kids were made of different stuff then today's youth! I bet you have a few other stories besides that one! Chief Joseph is a great road as well, and so very different from Beartooth. The year I was there filming it had major construction on it so I did not feel the video was representative. I have never done Rattlesnake grade but I have heard enough about it to know that I need to. Thanks for watching, and for leaving a comment.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz Рік тому

      I do understand your sentiment. Horsefly does derive a lot of it's economy from the folk that come as tourists and leave money. Some are genuinely looking to escape the city, if that is where they are even from, and some will stay and continue to contribute to the community. Others though do act like their money entitles them and I am sorry that has been your experience, but most of us have experienced thatat least once in a while. Tourism is a double edged sword. You do have a beautiful community and an enjoyable road to ride.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz Рік тому

      You were but I understand your sentiment quite well, and I also appreciate that we are now having a civil, and meaningful conversation, thank you. I suspect you are like myself in that especially over the last few years we have just had enough of the social changes that are being driven by politics rather then by reality. Many people are near the breaking point and we just want our little part of the world to be left alone and every once in a while something pushes us over the edge. People come into a nice little community and instead of embracing the ways that attracted them in the first place they want just a couple little extras. Garbage collection is maybe where it starts, then recycling (most of which doesn't actually get recycled anyway but it makes us feel good!!) Before we even see it coming the local community has banned plastic drinking straws (saving all the local seals in Horsefly from that misery) and we have 10 very expensive electric vehicle charging systems that never have anyone using them. Our taxes have went up. We are told we can no longer come to town with our folding knife on our belt, and their is some university grad writing tickets for us riding our quad on the river sand bar because of the environmental damage we are doing. Our world has went crazy. The other side of visitors is multi faceted. We can show them that different ways of life maybe are not so wrong after all. They do inject money into the local economy (your local artisans, fishing resorts, etc. cannot exist on just the local market). By winning over some visitors allies are made that will speak up for the local community when needed in the outside world, say to encourage tax dollars be spent to repair a flood damaged road or ??? There is so much more that visitors can provide as well. As I said before tourism is a double edged sword with both benefits and drawbacks, and I do see your initial point, what is important is to make the best of it and shape it to our needs.
